Wes Anderson Says Michael Cera Is Joining Benicio Del Toro In His Next Film

This has been a really productive year for Wes Anderson. This summer, we saw the filmmaker release his latest star-studded affair, “Asteroid City,” which got his fans very excited. Now, we’re eagerly anticipating his next project—a series of shorts—arriving on Netflix this month. But even with multiple projects getting released in 2023, we are still trying to figure out what’s next. Well, according to Wes Anderson, he already has the script written for his new film.

According to an interview with Deadline, Wes Anderson has already finished the script for his next project. Not only that, he already has two of the stars attached. If you’re a fan of Anderson, it would also probably not surprise you to know that he is, once again, working with Roman Coppola, a screenwriter he has worked with for years and years now. But outside of that info, he’s not elaborating too much further.

“Well, before the Writer’s Guild strike began, we had just finished a script. Roman Coppola and I had been working on a script,” said Anderson. “So, when the time is right again, we’ve got a movie to make with Benicio Del Toro.”

Del Toro previously worked with Anderson on the filmmaker’s movie, “The French Dispatch.” Back in June, it was revealed that the actor was going to appear in the upcoming film, which is described as having a “darker tone.” When pressed about more info about the new project, the filmmaker wouldn’t divulge the title of the film, and he wouldn’t even give any hints. However, later in the interview, when the topic of actors he’d like to work with in the future came up, Anderson did tease another name associated with the new project—Michael Cera.

“Well, you know, we have Michael Cera. He’s one of the other characters in this new story,” said the filmmaker. “And he’s somebody I probably met, I think, close to 20 years ago. At least 18 years ago, something like that. I met him with Harvey Keitel, so it must have been 2008 or something. But, anyway, Michael Cera. That’s one.”

Outside of that, considering this is a Wes Anderson film, you can probably list any number of names from his chosen group of actors to appear. He clearly enjoys working with the same people with each new project. So don’t be surprised if you see Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Adrien Brody, and the like showing up, as well.

Of course, it would be silly to try to predict when we might see the new untitled film. Not only do we have the WGA strike, which is causing production issues, but there’s also the SAG strike, which is preventing most projects from entering production. So, we’d have to see both of those get worked out before filming would begin, and then, we can maybe start guessing when the next Wes Anderson film will hit theaters.

What we do know is that you can see his latest project, the four Roald Dahl shorts including “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” arriving on Netflix later this week.
