Four Christmases is a holiday cult classic, released on November 26, 2008. The film follows Brad McVie and Katie Kinkaid, played by Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon, respectively, who typically go on tropical vacations for Christmas, but due to fog are forced to cancel and spend the holiday visiting all four of their divorced parents. While rushing to see all their loved ones, the pair realize how much they love each other and decide to get married and have children.
While not exactly a commercial or critical hit (it only has a 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the all-star cast and theme of a holiday romcom have led to it finding fans who will revisit it over the Christmas season. The cast is still made up of extreme talent, who continue to release great work. Keep reading to see where all the cast members are now.
When Reese Witherspoon, 46, was cast as the confident Katie Kinkaid in Four Christmases, she was already a successful superstar, with her 2006 Oscar win for playing June Carter in Walk The Line and having played the iconic Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.
Since the holiday film, Reese has starred in plenty more hit movies like Water for Elephants and Wild, in which she was also a producer. Wild also earned her second Academy Award nomination. Reese has also stepped into the TV world. She won an Outstanding Limited Series Primetime Emmy for Big Little Lies in 2017, and earned a lead actress nomination. She was also nominated for Outstanding Limited Series and Lead Actress for Little Fires Everywhere and The Morning Show, respectively. Reese has married her second husband Jim Toth, and the pair have one son Tennessee, Reese’s third.
No stranger to Christmas films, having starred in Fred Claus in 2007, or comedy, with lead roles in Wedding Crashers and Dodgeball, Vince Vaughn, 52, was set when he played the nerdy Brad (formerly Orlando) McVie in Four Christmases.
Since the movie, Vince has gone on to star in many more comedies like The Watch and The Internship, but it wasn’t the last Christmas project he worked on. He served as a writer and producer for the holiday romcom Christmas With The Campbells in 2022, and he produced the long-awaited sequel to A Christmas Story also. Two years after Four Christmases was released, he married his wife Kyla Weber, and they have two children.
While Kristin Chenoweth, 54, is a very small part of Four Christmases, her appearance as Kate’s sister Courtney is one of the most beloved part’s of the film. Courtney shares hilarious stories about her sister and kids and reveals the unsavory nickname “Cootie Kate.” When she joined the cast, she was already a Tony-winning Broadway star and had earned her first Primetime Emmy nomination for Pushing Daisies.
After Four Christmases, Kristin won her first Emmy for her role in Pushing Daises, and she’s been nominated three more times since, twice for her roles on the hit musical sitcom Glee. Since then, she’s had a variety of movie and TV roles and returned to the theater on a bunch of different occasions. More recently, Kristin got engaged to musician Josh Bryant in 2021.
Who could forget Brad’s brother Dallas, played by Tim McGraw? While the movie shows him as one of the brothers beating up Brad, Tim, 55, was already a well-established country superstar, who had dabbled in acting a few times before, when the film premiered.
While Tim hasn’t made any drastic career changes, he has appeared in a few movies since, including the hit The Blind Side in 2009, as well as the blockbusters Tomorrowland and The Shack in 2015 and 2017, respectively. Still, music is his number one, and he’s dropped seven albums and earned three Grammy nominations, since Four Christmases hit theaters.
One of the most hilarious characters in the film is Brad’s hippie mother Paula, played by Sissy Spacek, who married Brad’s childhood best friend. When Sissy, 72, joined the film, she was already a six-time Oscar nominee, having won in 1981 for Coal Miner’s Daughter, and she was well-respected for roles in films like Carrie and In The Bedroom.
After Four Christmases, Sissy continued starring in a variety of films like The Help and appeared in the TV series Big Love, which earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress. Most recently she appeared in the movie Sam and Kate and the TV show Night Sky.
Another veteran actor Robert Duvall, 91, had a lifetime of hit movies under his belt, when he appeared as Brad’s father Howard, who ends up offering him sage advice about marriage in the end. Long before starring in Four Christmases, Robert had one of the most impressive resumes in Hollywood with roles in The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and much more.
With so many career accomplishments already, Robert has not really slowed down in recent years. Since 2008, he’s starred in the dystopian drama The Road (2009), the sports film Seven Days in Utopia (2011), and earned an Oscar nomination in 2015 for The Judge. Most recently, he appeared alongside Adam Sandler in the sports drama Hustle.
Alongside Dallas, Brad’s other brother Denver, played by Jon Favreau, 56, also took part in beating him up in the movie, but he also flexed his wealth. Before joining the film, Jon had already directed (and acted) in the modern Christmas classic Elf. Besides his other directing and acting work, he had also begun playing Happy Hogan in Iron Man, which would become one of his defining career roles.
Since the movie, Jon has gone on to play Happy throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe as one of the most adored non-superhero characters. He also executive produced the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian, which earned him a series of Emmy nominations. A jack-of-all-trades Jon has directed, written and starred in his hit film Chef (2014). He’s also made acting appearances in The Wolf Of Wall Street and directed live-action versions of The Jungle Book and The Lion King.
A similar acclaimed star Jon Voight, 83, appeared as Kate’s father, who surprised the couple when he was getting along great with her mom. Like some of his co-stars, Jon had already won an Academy Award for Coming Home in 1979, and he had starred in an array of movies, from blockbusters like Anaconda to critical hits like Midnight Cowboy to family features like National Treasure.
The actor, who is Angelina Jolie’s dad, has starred in a bunch of different films and TV shows since the holiday romcom. Most notably, he’s been Mickey Donovan throughout the popular Showtime series Ray Donavan, and the role has earned him two Primetime Emmy nominations.
Yet another Oscar winner and Christmas movie veteran, Mary Steenburgen, 69, was critically-acclaimed for roles in movies like Melvin and Howard, and the family classic Elf, but her character as the religious Marilyn was a little different from her role in the modern classic.
Mary has appeared in many popular movies and series since Four Christmases. She appeared in the romcom The Proposal the following year, and a few years later, had a role in the historical drama The Help. She also had roles in the sitcoms Last Man Standing and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, which also had a Christmas special in 2021.
Tim McGraw wasn’t the only country star in Four Christmases. Dwight Yoakam, 66, was similarly a Grammy-winning musician long before he was cast as Pastor Phil, who helped Marilyn find religion. While music is his primary focus, Dwight had some roles before the holiday flick, including alongside Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crashers.
Like Tim, Dwight has had a few acting roles since the film, like in the TV series Goliath in 2016 and the 2021 film Cry Macho, but he’s also put much of his energy into music. He’s released three records since 2008, with the most recent being 2016’s Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars…
